France, Germany and Sweden have signed an agreement to cooperate in the development of a future medium tactical transport aircraft. The agreement forms the basis for the development of common specifications for the project and the implementation of industrial feasibility studies. Current plans suggest that development of the aircraft could begin in 2026 or 2027. From 2040, the C-130 Hercules and Casa CN-235 fleets could be replaced by the new transport aircraft, according to a press release from the French Air Force.

The signing took place as part of the European Wings event, held in France from June 22nd to 23rd. The project is part of the European Union's Permanent Structured Cooperation (PESCO) and is entitled Future Medium-Size Tactical Cargo (FMTC). It is one of the 14 new projects adopted by the Council of the European Union last November. (ESUT reported) In addition to France, which is coordinating the project, Germany and Sweden are also involved. However, all PESCO members have the opportunity to join the project in the future.
