Rohde and Schwarz Australia will develop and manufacture the integrated communications system for the Australian Navy's new Hunter-class frigates. A contract was signed yesterday between Rohde & Schwarz Australia and the maritime department of BAE Systems Australia. In the first phase, the contract covers the project management and system development of the integrated communication system as well as the integration, installation and verification during procurement and commissioning. Gareth Evans, Managing Director of Rohde & Schwarz Australia, emphasized that his company's aim with this project is to involve as many Australian companies as possible in the project. According to Rohde & Schwarz Australia, with this project the company can draw on experience it gained with the integration of the Naval Integrated Communication System (NAVICS) in the Type 26 frigates of the Royal Navy and the Evolved Cape Class Patrol Boats (ECCPB) for the Australian Navy made.
The Australian Navy has ordered nine Hunter-class frigates, about which ESuTreported. The frigates are based on the design of the Type 26 that BAE Systems builds for the Royal Navy.
