Rheinmetall has been commissioned by the Bundeswehr for a key tactical communications project. The company announced today that it had received a framework contract with a term of seven years to supply up to 191,000 sets of the “speaking set with hearing protection function”. A firm order has been placed for 30,000 sets including connecting cables for delivery in 2024. A call for the delivery of a further 30,000 sets is expected for 2025.

The speaking set with hearing protection function - called SmG for short - includes modern active earmuffs, which attenuates harmful impulse noise and can amplify quiet noises. The system also has a microphone and can be connected to various radio devices so that voice communications are possible. In addition to the combined headset, various push-to-talk (PTT) buttons and various cable sets for connecting to various radio devices and on-board intercom systems are included in the scope of delivery. Rheinmetall involved two leading manufacturers as subcontractors for the project: 3M Peltor with the ComTac VIII headset and CeoTronics AG with CT-Multi PTT 1C and 3C. The SmG is compatible with the new combat helmet also supplied by Rheinmetall as well as with other types of Bundeswehr helmets.
