Italy receives two more new 212A submarines. A corresponding contract has now been concluded between the Organization for Joint Armaments Cooperation OCCAR and the Italian shipyard Fincatieri.

On December 23, 2020, Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems reached an agreement with the Trieste-based company Ficantieri for the license to build two U212A class submarines for the Italian Navy. Between 2006 and 2017 Fincantieri has already delivered four U212A class boats to the Marina Militare with the support of Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems. Now two new generation submarines have been added.

It is agreed that Fincantieri will build the boats as general contractor in Italy, commission them and deliver them to the Marina Militare via OCCAR. As an option, the licensed construction of two more boats has been agreed. The U212NFS (Near Future Submarine) that have now been ordered are a further development of the U212A, which has been used in the German Navy since 2004. Ficantieri puts the order value for the first two ships including logistical support at 1.35 billion euros. The delivery dates mentioned were 2027 and 2029.

As part of its delivery and service obligations, Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems will manufacture certain components in Kiel in addition to the design services. These are the bow sections, the fuel cell systems and various small components. Fincantieri orders third-party supplies itself. The command and weapon deployment system is supplied by Leonardo. The conclusion of the contract for 150 million euros was also announced on February 26th.

Fincantieri und TKMS setzen Kooperation fort: zwei weitere U-Boote für die Marina Militare

Fincantieri posted an 11 percent drop in sales last year. Fincantieri's initiatives to consolidate its defense business, both nationally and internationally, are not accidental. Fincantieri relies on European partnerships in naval shipbuilding. This is how the company achieved success. She is building two new frigates for the Italian Navy (FREMM from the Franco-Italian joint project), a European Patrol Corvette, which was transferred to the Naviris joint venture (with Naval Group). Fincantieri was also awarded the contract for a frigate (FFG (X)) by the US Navy for its daughter Marinette Marine. Recently, the daughter Vard received an order to build a landing ship for the Chilean Navy with Rubin Design Bureau, one of the three important Russian submarine development centers, Fincantieri presented the draft of a conventional submarine with air-independent propulsion, the S 1000. Talks between Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems and Fincantieri about a possible merger were recorded in mid-2020 Chantiers de l'Atlantique failed.
