An offer has been received from South Korea for the OMFV (Optionally Manned Fighting Vehicle) program, which is being launched to replace the US Army's Bradley infantry fighting vehicle. The South Korean manufacturer Hanwha Defense offers its Redback infantry fighting vehicle as the basis for the concept development phase. Hanwha recently signed a cooperation agreement with Oshkosh Defense that increases the vehicle's chances in the US market.
This means that Hanwha is again competing against Rheinmetall, which will join the OMFV program with Lynx KF41. In the LAND 400 Phase 3 program in Australia, the two companies are competing with the same vehicles. Comparative tests are currently running there.
The parallelism of the two programs can be seen not only in similar offers but also in the fact that the foreign companies Hanwha and Rheinmetall have to set up industrial teams in their respective customer countries, with which part of the added value has to be generated locally.
There are now five competitors in the OMFV program. In addition to the two mentioned, these include BAE Systems together with Elbit (Israel), General Dynamics with AeroVironment and Applied Intuition and - according to a report by Defense News - Mettle Ops.
Hanwha's new partner, Oshkosh Defense, is known only as a manufacturer of wheeled vehicles. The current successful vehicle is the Joint Light Tactical Vehicle (JLTV), of which around 50,000 are to be built. The Redback is the second tracked vehicle to join the Oshkosh range. Almost a month ago, Oshkosh and ST Engineering from Singapore received an order to manufacture prototypes for the articulated cold-weather vehicle (Coldweather All Terrain Vehicle, CATV) on four tracks. It is currently unknown what stake Oshkosh will take on the orders. Most of the CATV is believed to be produced in Singapore.
