The Sea Lynx Mk88A weapon system has been the German Navy's on-board helicopter since 1981 and has been the backbone of surface and underwater naval warfare capabilities ever since. Equipped with a wide variety of equipment roles and mission equipment, the Sea Lynx with its underwater reconnaissance system serves as a sensor for target detection and with a torpedo -Armament as an effector for direct action. In addition, as an on-board helicopter, it performs tasks such as transporting material and personnel (e.g. specialized forces) and serves as a weapons carrier and an extended arm of the frigate in asymmetrical scenarios.

The effective spectrum and range of all frigate classes are thus significantly expanded by the on-board helicopter. According to current plans, the weapon system is to be decommissioned in 2025 after more than 44 years of use.

Incidents and low flight hours

Over time, four aircraft were lost in operational and training conditions. This was tragically fatal for a total of three occupants in two accidents. The Sea Lynx has often been in the negative spotlight of the media - most recently in 2011 and 2014, when cracks in the aircraft's tail boom caused significant restrictions in the availability of the entire fleet.
