The time when space was exclusively a place of longing for science fiction fans is finally over. As a new strategic and military dimension, space has become more crowded and contested.

This makes us as a society more vulnerable. On the one hand, attacks on our space infrastructure endanger our everyday life on earth. Without satellites, navigation, telecommunications and financial transactions would be unthinkable.

On the other hand, the ability of political and military decision-makers to judge, decide and act in foreign and security policy already depends on a sovereign presence in space and the unrestricted use of space systems.
