Krauss-Maffei Wegmann (KNDS) supplies the latest generation of state-of-the-art simulators for the training of the Swedish Army's tank soldiers on Leopard 2 main battle tanks. As the company announced, the contract between the Swedish Procurement Office (FMV) and KNDS provides for the delivery of a total of 18 high-fidelity simulators. The simulators replace the existing devices. In some cases the quantities are increased. KNDS is thus continuing its 25-year-long collaboration in the field of simulation.

The combination of turret and driving simulators enables training in company strength at the Land Warfare Center in Skövde as well as in platoon strength and at vehicle level at three other locations in Sweden, writes KNDS.

Mit dem Einsatz modernster Soft- und Hardware verfügen die Ausbildungssysteme KNDS zufolge unter anderem über eine vollfunktionale Integration des Ladeschützenplatzes mithilfe eines Waffensimulators sowie eine „Over-the-Hatch“ Sichtsystemlösung für den Kommandanten. Weiterer Bestandteil ist die Integration des schwedischen Führungssystems C2 Mark.

Nach Angabe der Beschaffungsbehörde Försvarets materielverk (FMV) ermöglicht der neue Simulator die Ausbildung einer kompletten Panzerbesatzung bestehend aus Panzerkommandant, Richtschütze, Fahrer und Ladeschütze in allen Ausbildungsstufen, von der Grundausbildung bis zur Truppenausbildung der Stridsvagn 122, wie die Leopard 2 in Schweden bezeichnet werden. Ebenso wie die Gefechtsfahrzeuge werde auch der Simulator mit dem neuen Führungsunterstützungssystem ausgestattet.

Deliveries are expected to be completed by 2029.

After handing over ten main battle tanks to Ukraine, Sweden still has around 100 tanks in its inventory, which technically correspond to an improved Leopard 2 A5. In October 2023, Sweden commissioned KNDS to modernize 44 tanks, which will be introduced into the force from 2026 as the Stridsvagn 123A. The scope of services includes the digitalization of almost all electronic components, a new L55 weapon system for programmable ammunition, new vision systems for commanders and gunners and new tracks.

In addition, Sweden has expressed interest in the latest version, Leopard 2 A8.
