“France is an Indo-Pacific power.” President Emmanuel Macron emphasized this during his “Nouméa Speech,” which he gave on July 26, 2023 in the capital of the French “Sui Generis Collectivité,” New Caledonia in the South Pacific. “Almost 1.5 million French people live in this region and more than 8,000 soldiers are stationed there,” Macron continued. And: “We have a voice in the Pacific and in Oceania!” This should obviously be heard by the neighboring states.

The French head of state completed an official trip from July 24 to 28 this year that took him to Oceania and South Asia. This was Macron's first overseas trip in his second term as President of the Republic. From July 24th to 26th he stayed in New Caledonia, visited Vanuatu on July 27th and Papua New Guinea and Sri Lanka on July 28th.
