So far, submarines have been defenseless against the threat of anti-submarine helicopters. In order to change this, the two German companies Diehl and thyssenkrupp Marine Systems (tkMS) have been working on the IDAS (Interactive Defense and Attack System for Submarines) project for several years and have founded the IDAS Consortium for this purpose. This should enable the submarine drivers to defend themselves against attacks from the air by means of a guided missile launched under water.

After a long time hardly anything was publicly heard about the project, it was included in the economic plan for the Bundeswehr special fund last year. The latest version of the business plan provides for the development of IDAS to be financed from the special fund.

According to well-informed circles in the industry, negotiations for the contract for the final development of IDAS between industry and the public client will probably start in the current year. everything goes as planned
