The German armaments producer Rheinmetall has agreed on a strategic cooperation with the Ukrainian state-owned company Ukroboronprom. Ukroboronprom is a state holding company with over 100 defense companies. According to a statement by Rheinmetall, the cooperation is intended to strengthen Ukraine's defense industry base by gradually building up joint defense technology capabilities in Ukraine.
Rheinmetall CEO Armin Papperger: "Due to its expertise, Rheinmetall is able to be a valuable partner to Ukraine in the short and long term."
Als erster Schritt ist die Gründung eines Joint-Ventures auf den Weg gebracht worden, das nach Vorliegen der staatlichen Genehmigungen ab Mitte Juli operativ sein soll. Das Joint Venture werde Grundlage für einen umfassenden Technologietransfer für einen Aufbau wehrtechnischen Kapazitäten im Land mit lokaler Wertschöpfung und zudem für kurzfristige Zulieferung von militärischer Ausrüstung aus Deutschland.
In concrete terms, Rheinmetall writes that the repair of military vehicles that were made available to Ukraine via ring exchange projects by the German federal government and through direct deliveries should form the basis of this cooperation.
In later phases, the cooperation should focus on the joint manufacture of selected Rheinmetall products in Ukraine on the basis of a comprehensive technology transfer. In the future, as part of the cooperation between Rheinmetall and Ukroboronprom, new military systems could also be jointly developed with the participation of Ukrainian and German specialists and exported from Ukraine.
