The US government has approved the potential sale of 60 CH-47F Chinook Block II transport helicopters, including an extensive equipment package, with a total value of up to $8.5 billion (€7.8 billion). This was announced by the Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA), the authority responsible for the export of US weapons systems as part of government business, in a statement on May 11, 2023. In addition, the US Congress was informed of the decision, which must also approve the sale.
The announcement shows that the German helicopters will be armed with M134 machine guns (introduced in the Bundeswehr under the designation MG6) and will also have a comprehensive protection package and equipment package - including snow skids and AirTEP systems for special forces operations.

In addition to the helicopters, the following equipment package has been approved for sale:
- 140 T-55-GA-714A engines (120 installed, 20 spares)
- 72 AN/AAR-57 Common Missile Warning Systems (CMWS) (60 installed, 12 spares)
- 284 AN/ARC-231A Communications Security (COMSEC) radios (240 installed, 44 spares)
