
Artificial intelligence in the military - Planned EU regulation could hinder development

In order to discuss the benefits, opportunities and risks of artificial intelligence (AI) in the military, it is first necessary to understand the most important terms relating to the technology and to shed light on the historical and current context.
Artificial intelligence as a term is not uniformly defined. Especially since it has been developing as an interdisciplinary research direction since the concept was formed at the end of the 1950s and its interpretation has always adapted to the technical possibilities. The following definition has proven useful for practical application: Artificial intelligence describes computer science applications whose aim is to show intelligent behavior. This requires certain core skills in different proportions: perception, understanding (recognition), action and learning.
