The Italian government on April 12 appointed Roberto Cingolani as CEO of the state-controlled defense company Leonardo. The appointment must be approved by the shareholders. He is set to succeed Alessandro Profumo, who is retiring after two terms in office since 2017.

Cingolani began as a scientist at the Max Planck Institute for Solid State Research in Stuttgart, became a physics professor in Lecce, Tokyo and Richmond and from 2005 headed the Istituto italiano di tecnologia (IIT) in Genoa. In 2019 he became Chief Technology and Innovation Officer at Leonardo. After that, a political career began, which led to Minister of Ecological Transition. After the change of government in 2022, he remained in the government as an energy advisor.
