Frigate 126: Rheinmetall supplies light naval guns

Der Düsseldorfer Rüstungs- und Automotive-Konzern Rheinmetall wird die zukünftigen Fregatten 126 mit mittelkalibrigen Geschützen ausstatten, wie Damen Naval, der niederländische Hauptauftragnehmer für die Konstruktion und Lieferung der F 126 mitteilt.

Rheinmetall will deliver its MLG27-4.0 light naval gun, the heart of which is the BK-27M revolver cannon. This gas-powered revolver cannon can be operated with belted or beltless ammunition. It combines low weight (approx. 100 kilograms) with a high rate of fire (1,700 rounds/min) and is used as armament for the Eurofighter, the Gripen, the Tornado and for the MLG27 naval light gun. Rheinmetall states that the BK27 is the most successful on-board cannon on the market with over 3,000 systems sold.

According to information from Rheinmetall, the next-generation MLG27-4.0 defense system has a number of other technological innovations compared to the previous MLG27 in addition to the new, fully digital system architecture. These include adjustable area fire capability, an integrated simultaneous tracker, and direct impact firing capability to external target coordinates. Visual camera, infrared sensor and laser range finder are standard in such ship weapon systems.

Der jetzt vergebene Auftrag umfasst acht Systeme MLG27-4.0 sowie eine Option auf gegebenenfalls vier weitere. Die Fregatte F126 wird mit zwei derartigen Systemen ausgerüstet sein.
