D.he scenario of the Russia-Ukraine war is repeatedly compared with China's claim to Taiwan: Russia's ruler Putin has also repeatedly referred to Ukraine as part of Russia. Chinese head of state Xi Jingping reaffirmed Beijing's claim to Taiwan at the party conference of his Communist Party. He has made it clear that he wants the “reunification"strives for, and that he does not exclude violence. Ever since Putin went to war in Ukraine, we have known that such threats should not be taken lightly.

The Pacific region has increasingly become the focus of international politics. The economic potential of the region makes it an important factor for all industrialized countries. The up-and-coming Indo-Pacific region is also playing an increasing role in shaping the international order in the 21st century. In 2020, the federal government issued "Indo-Pacific Guidelines" that define Germany's interests in the Indo-Pacific region. This gave German foreign and security policy an additional focus.

As the largest trading nation in the EU, Germany has a genuine interest in security and stability in this area, in which around two-thirds of global maritime trade takes place. Above all, “open sea routes” are required.
