The group is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. Founded on September 26, 1972 as Border Protection Group 9 of the former Federal Border Guard (BGS) as a result of the experience of the Olympic attack in Munich, the association has developed considerably since then.
In the 50 years, two outstanding operations of the "Nine" have particularly impressed: One took place in the Horn of Africa: In the night of October 17th to 18th, 1977, the GSG 9 under its founding commander Ulrich K. Wegener stormed the Palestinian Terrorists to Mogadishu hijacked the Lufthansa plane "Landshut" and freed all 86 hostages ("Operation Magic Fire"). In April 2009, a task force from GSG 9, with the support of the Federal Police Air Service, was ready, first in Kenya and then on the US helicopter carrier USS Boxer, to free the freighter "Hansa Stavanger" that had been hijacked by Somali pirates. Despite good prospects of success, the operational plan was ultimately not implemented.
