Die schweren Joint Fire Support Teams (JFSTsw) auf Boxer erhalten für die Beobachtung und Zielaufklärung das Panoramic Above Armour Gimbal (PAAG) von Thales. Wie das Unternehmen mitgeteilt hat, wurde Thales von der ARTEC, dem Hauptauftragnehmer für die Entwicklung der JFSTsw, mit der Lieferung von vier PAAG beauftragt. Die Systeme werden von Thales UK hergestellt.

Thales writes that the panoramic viewing system has one channel each for a thermal imager and a high-resolution daylight color camera, with which it is possible to identify targets in a range of up to four kilometers, depending on their size. The entire hemisphere around the vehicle can be covered by the cardanic suspension (gimbal) of the optics on a 360-degree turntable. The distance to targets and terrain points is to be determined up to a distance of ten kilometers using a laser range finder. The PAAG can be raised over a meter on a mast to expand the field of view without exposing the vehicle and its crew to enemy eyes.

The crew is assisted in target acquisition by an automated target detection system (Assisted Target Detection, ATD) and in target tracking by an automatic video system (Automatic Video Tracking, AVT). The systems are integrated into the PAAG and interact directly with the artillery command and weapon deployment system.

Die Bedienung des elektronischen Überwachungssystems erfolgt vollständig aus der geschützten Kabine des Boxers. Nach Angabe von Thales erhalten die JFST eine stabile DRI-Fähigkeit  – DRI steht für Detection, Recognition, Identification- mit großer Reichweite, die während der Fahrt bei Tag und Nacht genutzt werden kann.

In December 2021, OCCAR agreed with ARTEC on behalf of the Bundeswehr to develop a prototype JFSTsw, of which ESuTreported. Der Prototyp besteht aus je einem Fahrzeug für Boden/Boden- und für Luft/Boden-Aufgaben und soll so rechtzeitig geliefert werden, dass die Serienbeschaffung 2023 in Auftrag gegeben werden kann. Bis 2027 sollen weitere neun JFSTsw (18 Fahrzeuge) der Truppe zur Verfügung stehen.
