German Navy – Standardization of command and weapon deployment systems
Hans Uwe Mergener
Command and weapon deployment systems (FüWES), usually referred to in English as Combat Direction System (CDS) or Combat Management System (CMS), are sophisticated technical systems in terms of requirements and scope.
They are intended to enable a seagoing unit to fulfill its mission in complex maritime situations, including the use of weapons. The beginnings of the development of FüWES go back directly to the post-war period at the end of the 1940s through the work of the Royal Navy and the US Navy. Initially, the aim was to use the possibilities of electronic data processing, in particular radar data from different seagoing units, to condense them in order to be able to visualize them as a closed situation picture on a data display device.
