By combining two subsystems, Rheinmetall MAN Military Vehicles (RMMV) and the Slovakian CSM Industry have worked together to create the new highly mobile multi-purpose HX 8×8 Excavator excavator vehicle. RMMV contributed the 8×8 chassis from the HX series for mobility. The military-off-the-shelf vehicle is designed for the toughest military operations and offers excellent mobility even in demanding terrain, is how Rheinmetall describes the vehicle. The company sees pioneer troops and disaster relief workers as potential users.

The vehicle, including the crane, weighs 28 tons and is powered by a 387 kW motor. This means that it can reach a top speed of 90 km/h on the road, according to Rheinmetall. With the ability to overcome inclines of up to 60 percent and wade through water up to 1.5 m deep, the all-wheel drive vehicle can reach almost any location thanks to its comparatively low weight.

For military needs, the vehicle can be equipped or prepared for a protectively ventilated cab protected according to STANAG criteria, which Rheinmetall offers under the name Integrated Armored Cabin (IAC). In addition, a remote-controlled weapon station can be integrated. Then the total weight increases by about two tons to 30 tons.

Used as a temporary crane, the HX 8×8 Excavator can lift loads of up to 7.5 tons and is therefore suitable for repair and logistics tasks as well as for clearing tasks.

Rheinmetall sees the HX 8×8 Excavator as an example of cooperation with European and international partners. This does not only refer to the technological cooperation. CSM could also open up further export markets through the cooperation with Rheinmetall.
