With the renewed exacerbation of the Ukraine crisis by Russia's unprecedented threat of military invasion of Ukraine, the USA, the EU and Germany are threatening harsh economic sanctions, which could also mean a permanent shutdown of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline.

At the same time, the Kremlin has been using European gas dependencies as a political weapon since early summer 2021 to increase political pressure on Ukraine as well as on Germany and the EU.

Since the early summer of last year at the latest, the global energy supply crisis has also had an impact on Europe's energy supply security. Although the global energy crisis is responsible for this, the Russian President Vladimir Putin and his gas company Gazprom are less responsible, although the company is the Kremlin's most important external energy policy instrument.

Aber Putin hat einmal mehr die neue europäische Gaskrise genutzt, um durch politischen Druck und diplomatisches Geschick seinen geo-ökonomischen und geopolitischen Einfluss auszuweiten. Wie in den letzten Jahren bei der Migrations-, Syrien- oder Libyenkrise nutzt der Kreml internationale Krisen, die gemeinsame EU-Außen-, Sicherheits- und Energiepolitik herauszufordern, ihre Grenzen aufzuzeigen und seinen geopolitischen Einfluss auszubauen.
