The shipyards Fincantieri, Naval Group and Navantia intend to work more closely together to qualify for the Modular Multi-Purpose Patrol Corvette (MMPC) program, according to a joint press release. The MMPC program aims to develop the first joint naval capability of its kind in Europe. To this end, the three major shipyards have set up a consortium led by Fincantieri, Naval Group and Navantia and coordinated by Naviris. Last week, the consortium submitted a first industrial proposal for the MMPC tender of the European Defense Fund (EDF).

The background to the MMPC program is a changed understanding of the role of the European Union in defense issues. In recent years there have been increasing calls for Europeans to take more responsibility for their own security, both within the framework of NATO and within the framework of the common European security and defense policy. Several member states of the European Union agree that the EU is increasingly confronted with various threats and therefore see a need to develop common military capabilities.

With their cooperation, the shipyards Fincantieri, Naval Group and Navantia indicate that they consider cooperation in the field of EU naval defense to be necessary. The aim of the industrial offer submitted by the three partners is to leverage synergies between the shipbuilding companies. The joint development of a new ship is intended to ensure European sovereignty in the field of second-tier warships. The MMPC will be designed to meet specific national requirements, using the defined design as a common reference, the joint press release said.
