The New Zealand Armed Forces have received three HX44M heavy-duty four-axle four-wheel drive recovery vehicles from Rheinmetall MAN Military Vehicles (RMMV). The vehicles will be included in the fleet of medium and heavy logistics vehicles that RMMV delivered in 2013/2014. The fleet consists of 200 HX series trucks in 4×4, 6×6 and 8×8 configurations and various equipment (some with winch, crane, container carrying frame) including tractor units and trailers.

An additional protected cabin was delivered for the three recovery vehicles, which can be replaced with the existing cabin using troop resources if greater protection is required. According to Rheinmetall, the world's recovery vehicles are now equipped with an integrated armored swap cab. Rheinmetall is also providing a special training team to support the New Zealand Armed Forces with initial training on the vehicle.

The HX 8×8 Heavy Recovery Vehicles feature enhanced recovery and mobility capabilities specifically designed to meet the current and future operational needs of the New Zealand Armed Forces. The vehicles have hydraulic towing goggles at the rear of the vehicle that can be used to lift a damaged vehicle. The lifting capacity is 15 tons.
