In the second half of 2020 there was a turning point in the conduct of the war, which was also noticed by the general public. “New weapons are changing the war,” reported the Tagesschau in October 2020 as part of a current report on the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan.

Changed, ultra-modern warfare between two state actors determined the fighting in the Nagorno-Karabakh region for around 40 days and resulted in high personnel and material losses on the Azerbaijani and Armenian sides. The manner of this warfare and the use of unmanned aerial vehicle systems as sensors and effectors reveal in retrospect a considerable interest in military knowledge, especially with a view to ground-based air defense. This is because this is brought into the focus of operation planning and operation management when it comes to the need for protection of the forces operating on the ground.
