Rheinmetall and its joint venture company Rheinmetall BAE Systems Land (RBSL) presented the demonstrator of a Boxer with an 81mm mortar mission module for the first time today at the DSEI 2021 trade fair in London.
The "new prototype mission module was developed and built in Great Britain by an experienced team of engineers and specialists from the RBSL site in Telford," Rheinmetall said in a press release. The aim of the project is to demonstrate the versatility of the Boxer platform and thus its ability to meet specific customer requirements.
The "81mm Mortar Weapon System (MWS81)" developed by Rheinmetall is used as the weapon system of the mortar prototype. According to Rheinmetall, the semi-automatic MWS81 has a small number of mechanical parts, which is reflected in greater reliability.
The aiming of the weapon system is automated, loading is done by hand. All 81 mm mortar types can be fired, including the high explosive (HE), smoke and flare ammunition. “The versatile Boxer rapid fire variant also makes it possible to scaffold customer-specific mortar barrels and fire control computers for fully autonomous applications (fire release is not autonomous according to the “human-in-the-loop principle”). The MWS81 also has an emergency operation function. In this way, the system can continue to fire even in the event of failures or malfunctions, the company writes in its press release.
