It has been some time since the German Navy's future Multi-Purpose Combat Ship 180 (MKS 180) became the Class 126 Frigate (F126). With this renaming, the current system of ship classes in the German Navy was taken into account. The ship fits seamlessly into the nomenclature of the frigate classes of the German Navy. With the contract signed in June last year for the design, construction and delivery of the ships, the accompanying publication of the first renderings and finally the new designation, there is a rightly widespread feeling of “Here we go”.

With a displacement of around 10,000 t, 166 m long, 22 m wide and six meters draft, the class 126 frigate will be the largest combat ship in the German Navy. It will have a top speed of over 26 knots powered by a combined diesel-electric Codlad propulsion system and will be able to operate in polar waters with light ice formation. Key areas are specially protected. Due to the two-island principle and multiple redundant systems, the frigates will have increased stability.
