Once the budget has been approved by the parliamentary committees, the Puma armored personnel carriers will be upgraded to the S1 configuration level. The contract with PSM GmbH was concluded on June 28, 2021.
The retrofitting of the Puma infantry fighting vehicle to the standard S1 configuration is carried out in several stages. Under an ongoing contract, 40 armored personnel carriers are currently being retrofitted in good time so that they will be available for preparation from 2022 and then for use at the spearhead of NATO VJTF in 2023. The contract that has now been concluded with PSM GmbH, the 50:50 joint venture between Rheinmetall and Krauss-Maffei Wegmann, covers the retrofitting of a first batch with initially four proof samples and then another 150 AFVs in the period up to 2026. Around one billion euros will be spent on this. In two options, the retrofitting of a second lot with 143 Puma worth 820 million euros has been agreed. This should be completed by 2029.
