The Bundeswehr's NH90 TTH tactical transport helicopters will receive a new system to defend against combat systems that are guided by radar, infrared or ultraviolet radiation. On July 29, Hensoldt was commissioned by NAHEMA (NATO Helicopter Management Agency) to install an Electronic Warfare System (EWS) that can detect such threats and initiate countermeasures. NAHEMA acts as a client for the NH90 developer nations towards the manufacturer consortium NHIndustries.

The requirements for the new systems are based on operational experiences that the troops had in Afghanistan and Mali, among others, writes the Federal Office for Equipment, Information Technology and Use of the Bundeswehr (BAAINBw) in a press release.

Together with the work now commissioned, the upgrade package for the NH90 TTH includes a total of 60 individual measures to adapt the helicopters to the current threat situation, the BAAINBw continued.

“The new EWS offers the helicopter significantly increased self-protection compared to the current EWS. With the SatCom system, the crew can communicate with the other units in the operational area at any time via a stable and topology-independent connection,” says Gero Anthe, head of the NH90 system management department at BAAINBw.
