25 years ago, on April 22, 1996, Germany and Italy sealed the beginning of a profound partnership in the field of submarines in a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). The aim was not only to build the pioneering U212A class (Thyssen Krupp Marine Systems, tkMS) as a successor to the German 206 boats and the Italian Sauro class. Even at that time, the common view extended far into the future.
Following the procurement phase, the MoU was supplemented by a supplement on September 2, 2002. This now focused on the joint in-service support for the U212A class of boats. The supplement focused on the following core areas that characterize this successful cooperation to this day:
