French main weapon for future land combat system
Gerhard Heiming
Nexter has presented its main armament concept for the land combat system of the future that Germany and France are developing under the name Main Ground Combat System (MGCS).
Since high-intensity confrontations are expected to return in the next few decades, the MGCS and similar systems will also require a large-caliber on-board cannon as their main armament. Based on the experience with the 120 mm smoothbore cannon with automatic loading on the Leclerc main battle tank and its own ammunition development, including telescopic ammunition, Nexter has developed the Ascalon concept (Autoloaded and SCALable Outperforming guN).
