Switzerland is exploring who can take on an order for the delivery of a new combat aircraft and a ground-based air defense system with a greater range. A delegation from the Federal Department of Defense, Civil Protection and Sport, led by Armaments Chief Martin Sonderegger, has been visiting authorities and industrial companies in Paris, Berlin and Washington that are participating in the Swiss Air2030 program since January 5th. The delegation first visited Paris on January 5, 2021. Further visits are planned for January 21st in Berlin and January 25th to 28th in Washington.

New fighter aircraft for Switzerland

In 2014, the procurement of the Saab Gripen fighter aircraft in Switzerland failed due to a no vote by citizens. Now the Swiss have voted in a further vote for a new fighter aircraft, but not for a specific type. The Swiss government plans to provide around six billion francs for the new fighter aircraft. At least 30 new combat aircraft are to be procured.

The Air 2030 program also includes the renewal of the ground-based air defense, for which two billion francs are estimated. This is the largest and most comprehensive procurement program for the Swiss armed forces to date.

Airbus and the Federal Republic of Germany submitted an official offer for the Eurofighter Tranche 4 fighter aircraft in Switzerland on November 18, 2020. France and the manufacturer Dassault are applying with the Rafale. There are two offers from the USA with the Boeing F / A-18 Super Hornet and Lockheed-Martin F-35A.

On November 18, 2020, the offers made by the manufacturers in question for the new, longer-range ground-based air defense systems to Switzerland were also received by armasuisse. The Eurosam consortium from France is applying with the Aster 30 SAMP / T system. From the USA Raytheon entered the race with Patriot.

Working on the evaluation reports

Work on the evaluation reports for the new combat aircraft and the larger-range ground-based air defense is ongoing in parallel to the current discussions. The evaluation reports should be completed in the first quarter of 2021. The decision on a certain type by the Federal Council is planned for both systems in the 2nd quarter of 2021.
