In June 2020, after a multi-year award process in a European competition, the multi-purpose combat ship class 180 (MKS 180) project reached the most important milestone of its implementation to date, the conclusion of a construction contract with the company Damen Schelde Naval Shipbuilding.The MKS 180 will initially be procured in a quantity of four units with an option of two further units to cover the conceptual requirement of six units for worldwide use in the entire intensity spectrum for the capability of three-dimensional naval warfare. The first unit is scheduled to arrive in 2028, with the others scheduled to arrive by 2032.
The abilities
Zur intensiven Nutzbarkeit des MKS 180 von bis zu zwei Jahren im Einsatz und zur signifikanten Reduzierung der Besatzungsstärke gegenüber in Dienst befindlichen Einheiten setzt das Projekt MKS 180 auf dem Mehrbesatzungs- und Intensivnutzbarkeitskonzept der Fregatte Klasse 125 auf.
Mit dem Mehrzweckkampfschiff wird eine Plattform zur Verfügung stehen, die, ausgestattet mit dem Missionsmodul ASW-Lagebild (Anti Submarine Warfare) mit dem Kernelement eines LFTASS (Low Frequency Towed Active Sonar System) und der Kompatibilität zum Nachfolge-Bordhubschrauber, einen Fähigkeitsschwerpunkt in der großräumigen U-Boot-Jagd zum Schutz von Verbänden und Gebieten hat. Entsprechend ist vorgesehen, das MKS 180 in den Einsatzverbänden der NATO mit Schwerpunkt in einer U-Boot-Jagd-Konfiguration einzuplanen und einzusetzen.

The mission-modular equipment options also allow the needs of other operations and missions to be covered, for example the requirements of the "Atalanta" operation or the missions/operations recently carried out in the Mediterranean through the detention module.
