For a few weeks now, US President Donald Trump's announcement that the US troops stationed in Europe will be reorganized has been hotly debated in Germany and Europe. In Germany, above all, many hope that the plans will be changed again by a possible US President Jo Biden. But that is still a long way off.
The decision of the American President Donald Trump to withdraw 12,000 soldiers from Germany because Germany is not increasing its defense spending quickly enough, i.e. to punish Germany, as he believes, is an unparalleled affront. Even if Trump wins the November election in the US, it is unlikely that the withdrawal will be implemented as it has now been announced. Even the logic is lagging, after all, Belgium and Italy, countries to which troops are to be relocated, spend a smaller share of the gross domestic product on defense than Germany.
