Bringing innovations into the hands of soldiers faster: The Cyber Innovation Hub of the Bundeswehr (CIHBw) took on this task as the first military Digital Innovation Unit (DIU) in Germany in 2017. Since then, the CIHBw has been working closely with the start-up world. The latest contribution to the digital transformation of the Bundeswehr is the Bw-eToken app as part of the free rail travel in uniform.

Dhe Cyber Innovation Hub of the Bundeswehr was founded in early 2017, initially as a three-year project by the Federal Ministry of Defense (BMVg). After a successful first pilot phase, the hub was consolidated this year and has since been anchored as an innovation unit with its own rules of procedure in BWI GmbH, the Bundeswehr's IT system house. The CIHBw acts as a digital innovation unit (Digital Innovation Unit, short: DIU) at the interface between the start-up ecosystem and the armed forces and is intended to promote the digital transformation of the armed forces. A key success factor of the CIHBw is the high diversity of its team, which is both military and civil and in this form is unique in Germany. The majority of the soldiers are on reserve service; many of the civilian employees have start-up experience.
