The Royal Marines Commandos receive new combat uniforms as part of the Future Commando Force modernization project. The new outfit is based on Crye-Precision Generation 4 clothing. The Royal Marines Commando Uniform 2020 consists of combat shirt and trousers, field shirt and trousers, service jacket and service belt. It is lighter, faster drying, more tear-resistant and more breathable than regular clothing. In addition, the Royal Marines Commando Uniform 2020 will be delivered in multicam. This distinguishes the Marines from the other armed forces, whose clothing is in the Multi Terrain Pattern (MTP), also developed by Crye. The new combat uniform is procured through the NATO Support & Procurement Agency.
The new uniform that will take effect from September 2020 is not only intended to increase the operational value. Rather, it should also express the external return to the role of an amphibious commando troop with the ongoing restructuring of the Future Command Force. The rectangular ribbon Royal Marines Commando with red writing on navy blue is reminiscent of the role of commandos in the Second World War - especially since it was introduced almost 80 years after Operation Collar, the first commando raid. The Fairbairn Sykes dagger in the badge of the 3 Commando Brigade Royal Marines was also adapted to the appearance of the first model of the legendary combat knife issued in 1940. Furthermore, the affiliation to the Royal Navy is shown: For the first time since 1664, the Marines wore the White Ensign naval war flag in a tactically disguised variant on the uniform.
The reorganization Future Commando Force is currently considered the largest transformation of the Royal Marines since World War II. As a versatile, elite group of the Royal Navy, it is to be deployed worldwide from sea - whether in arctic, mountainous, tropical areas or other coastal regions. The focus is on command companies. The procurement of the new uniform is therefore also a signal of the willingness to modernize.
