The new air defense system Robotsystem 98 RBS 98 has been successfully tested. The system has been tested on the Vidsel firing range since November 5. According to the Swedish procurement authority Försvarets materielverk (FMV), only minor software changes are required after these takeover tests before the introduction into the group.

The core of the air defense system is formed by Diehl Defense's IRIS-T (Infra Red Imaging-Thrust Vector controlled) missiles, which are used in the IRIS-T SLS (Surface launched short range) version. Sweden is the first nation to use the open system design of the newly developed family for ground-based air defense (GBAD) and to combine and integrate system elements (sensors / radars, guidance and control systems, communication systems) from different manufacturers into a single powerful weapon system . RBS 98 uses the articulated BV 410 from BAE Systems / Hägglunds.

Except for a small software adjustment, RBS 98 is the same system used in the Jas 39 Gripen fighter jet. In the near future, the RBS 98 will be complemented by the Patriot mid-range air defense system.
