The fate of Europe is more and more linked to the fate of Africa - in both positive and negative. Opportunities and challenges arising from the development of Africa directly affect Germany and Europe. Again and again there is justifiably talk of the "African continent of opportunity". The economic and innovative potential is enormous. This is important in a developed partnership that is harder and harder to tap into.

At the same time, the developments of the past few months show the risks and challenges that the African continent poses very clearly. Crises, unstable states, low levels of development with little job prospects and high population growth, a lack of health care not only increase the pressure on the states and the state institutions themselves, but also threaten to destabilize entire regions.

These challenges are particularly evident in the Sahel region like in a burning glass. The increase in terrorist violence and the formation of new terrorist networks, ongoing conflicts, continuing poor governance in some countries and, at the same time, increasingly frequent and severe extreme weather events have further destabilized the region. The security forces of the Sahel states are not up to this security challenge.
