In order to increase the protection of the forces and improve their effectiveness, unmanned combat systems are increasingly being used. Milrem Robotics has now presented an unmanned infantry fighting system called Typ-X in a webinar - instead of the presentation at the failed Eurosatory.
Milrem Robotics is developing a remote-controlled modular platform that can be used to deploy a variety of mission equipment. The platform features a hybrid drive system that combines a battery, fuel tank, electric motor and diesel engine to provide virtually silent operation. The rubber track also contributes to this. The range is indicated with approx. 600 km.
In the infantry combat vehicle version, the Typ-X will be equipped with an unmanned turret with a cannon in calibres between 30 mm and 50 mm. The combat weight is stated as 12 tons. The vehicle is only 2.20 m high, 2.90 m wide and 6.00 m long. This results in a high tactical (in the terrain) and strategic (e.g. in the air) mobility. The low silhouette combined with the low heat signature makes reconnaissance by enemy forces more difficult.
The concept envisages mission modules for anti-aircraft, mortar, anti-tank, radar carrier, recovery and transport, as well as the addition of sensors or other components as required.
The Typ-X is designed from scratch, taking into account its reparability. Line Replaceable Units (LRU) allow for quick repair under operational conditions. In addition to halving procurement costs, maintenance costs should also be very low.
Milrem Robotics developed the Typ-X with extensive support from a country's armed forces, but retains the property rights. So far, the Type-X exists only as paperware. The components have been selected. A functional prototype is to be built this year, which will be used for company testing. Milrem Robotics expects to be able to present a marketable product after about three years.
Then the Typ-X could follow as its bigger brother the unmanned ground vehicle THeMIS, which is currently gaining its first combat experience in Mali.
