The French infantry (Marine Infantry and Foreign Legion) currently deployed in Africa in the Sahel-Sahara have been the first to receive Thales' new bi-ocular O-NYX night vision goggles. During the year, 3,179 of 3,519 devices ordered are to be issued to the troops in all branches of the armed forces. The rest will follow in 2021. The French procurement authority DGA wants to procure several thousand O-NYX by 2025. The O-NYX is identical in construction to the Lucie-2 goggles introduced by the Bundeswehr as part of the IdZ-ES system.

The procurement of the night vision goggles is part of the procurements under the "Loi de programming militaire 2019-2025" to improve equipment and protection of the soldiers, which includes a section of personal equipment in addition to the large equipment such as Jaguar, Griffon and Serval. These include the pistolGlock 17 GEN5, the HK416F assault rifle, the sniper rifleFN SCAR-H PR, flame retardant clothing, protective vests and plates.
