The production of the full operational readiness of the Puma weapon system continues to this day. This is a process in which the results of operational tests, experience from the troops as well as further technical developments and the realization of system components are continuously incorporated.

General conditions in the course of the introduction of the SPz Puma

The cornerstone for the new development of an armored personnel carrier (IFV) for the Panzergrenadiertruppe was laid in 1998 with the tactical concept "New Armored Platforms" (NGP). Before the introduction of the SPz Puma, there were three structural changes in the army, which included the reduction of the armed forces and a focus on stabilization operations. With the reduction in the armed forces as a whole came the reduction in the main weapon systems. A modernization of the remaining weapon systems in terms of their precision and distance capability was essential in order to maintain the assertiveness of the armored troops. Based on the current security policy situation and as a result of the NATO summit in Wales in 2014, the concept of the Bundeswehr from 2018 put the focus back on national and alliance defense. The consequences of this decision become clear with Germany's responsibility for the Very High Readiness Joint Task Force (Land) (VJTF (L) 2019). In terms of concept, the SPz Puma therefore had to be able to cover the entire spectrum from stabilization operations to high-intensity combat between the combined forces.
