The current training with the 120 mm mortar is considerably disturbed by the unreliability of the old and superimposed ammunition and the resulting blocking of individual charges and types of ammunition.ES&T reported on this in detail in July 2018.After several years of delay in the project Hirtenberger Defense Europe has now been awarded the contract for the refurbishment of old stocks of 120-mm ammunition.

The five-year contract stipulates that the company will reprocess up to 70,000 mortar bombs by 2026. The propellant cartridge, basic charge and propellant charges of the currently superimposed ammunition will be replaced. According to Hirtenberger, the ammunition will be delivered ready for use. The current restrictions on ammunition would therefore be obsolete.
