With the ISTAR division of the parent company Elbit Systems, the portfolio of TELEFUNKEN RACOMS was once again expanded. Unmanned vehicles have become an important part of dealing with modern security challenges and will continue to gain strategic, tactical and operational importance in the future. The range of unmanned systems from TELEFUNKEN RACOMS includes various autonomous and semi-autonomous VTOL solutions, fixed-wing aircraft and watercraft for reconnaissance, detection and action in action radii of 10km - 800km.
"Seagull™" is the maritime UPS (Unmanned Surface Vehicle) solution from TELEFUNKEN RACOMS and Elbit Systems ISTAR. As a partially and fully autonomous UPS system, it can be used for a variety of missions.
The core competencies of the USV are in the area of mine combat (MCM) and anti-submarine warfare (ASW). The UPS has an automatic function for detecting, classifying, locating, identifying and neutralizing anchor rope and floating mines in standing and flowing waters. The system works completely autonomously, so that the personnel requirements and the individual risk for emergency services are reduced to a minimum. Due to its excellent ASW properties, Seagull™ is able to detect and deter submarines and thus generate advantages on a tactical level.

To combat mines, Seagulls™ can act alone or in shoals; one USV uses a forward-looking and side-scan sonar to clarify, while the other initiates the neutralization of the mine using the Mine Identification and Destruction System (MIDS). When addressing and neutralizing the target, the UAV is controlled directly by the operator and does not act autonomously. The reconnaissance of sea mines is up to 4 times faster than other systems. Seagull™ has already presented itself on several MCM missions in European territorial waters, during which it used the latest sonar technology for search, reconnaissance and classification and successfully neutralized several mines with the help of the MIDS.
Efficiency
Seagull™ can be controlled by a team of 4 operators, which significantly reduces operating and procurement costs as well as personnel expenses compared to conventional methods. The UPS guarantees maximum flexibility and mission-dependent loads in the areas of ASW, MCM and EloKa (EW), Maritime Security (MS) and hydrography. The system is fully interoperable with other solutions from TELEFUNKEN RACOMS.
At 12m in length, Seagull™ is highly mobile, air transportable and capable of being launched from a mothership. After being set down, the system can independently reach the place of use within a few hours. The Seagull™ behaves like a conventional watercraft through the use of AIS, radar, electro-optics and cameras. TELEFUNKEN RACOMS Seagull™ can monitor and reconnoiter fully autonomously for more than four days with its 2 diesel engines. Seagull™ communicates up to 20 nautical miles via data link or with almost unlimited range via Satcom. With the help of continuous communication, the operator can detect sea mines in real time and react to them. Seagull™ automatically deploys reconnaissance probes, transmits data in real time and then recovers the sensors fully automatically.
In addition, the UPS can be controlled autonomously or with an operator on board.
The use of reconnaissance sensors such as dipping sonar, EO/IR sensors, side scan/forward looking and diver detection sonar is possible. Different means of action such as a remote control weapon station, torpedo launching system, diver neutralization system or non-lethal weapons are also options.
Seagull™ is already in service with the Israel Defense Forces and is used successfully to protect sensitive infrastructure, frigates, corvettes and submarines.
The system is the end-to-end solution for challenges above and below water. Seagull™ is the optimal UPS system solution for asymmetric threats and, due to its compact design, is an inconspicuous but powerful element of maritime combat operations.
