The French Thales Group acquired the insolvent Austrian engine manufacturer Steyr Motors. Steyr Motors had come to the 2,018 employed in Chinese managing liquidity problems after the takeover by a Chinese financial investor in 2012 and had a reorganization proceedings initiated.

Steyr Motors provides inter alia engines for numerous military vehicles, including also the Defenture Vector, a special forces vehicle of the Dutch Corps Commandotroepem. Because of supply problems eg got the upgrade program Duro in Switzerland under pressure. In the program of the Steyr engine by a Fiat engine was replaced. Increasing costs of about seven million euros.

Thales is the 4 × 4 Hawkei, 1,100 units were built by the since 2017 for the Australian armed forces, equipped with a Steyr engine.

With the acquisition of Steyr Motors with its more than 140 employees, Thales secures the supply of engines for its vehicles. According to Thales, the order books are full capacity for the next two years.
