The infantry's specifications include fighting in wooded terrain and urban environments, which, in addition to high physical and psychological demands on the soldier, also requires a special mix of weapon systems.

The well-covered battlefield in the forest and in towns allows the enemy to protect himself not only from reconnaissance but also from the effects of infantry flat fire. Therefore, weapons are needed that can work either through or behind cover. To overcome these challenges, each commander of the infantry units in the HEER2011 has a heavy infantry company. In addition to the Wiesel weapon carriers (automatic cannon / anti-tank guided missile TOW), this company has a fire support platoon (observer) and a 120 mm mortar platoon, which are integrated into the armed forces' joint tactical fire support (STF), and are responsible for the indirect fire support of the association.
